Conrad Steel Menu Close About Writing CV Contact I’m a writer, teacher, and researcher. I received my BA and PhD in English from Cambridge and my MA in French from King’s College London. My research is on modern and contemporary writing in English and French, and mostly focuses on the cultural roles of poetry. My first book, Big Data: Apollinaire and the Scale of American Poetry (under contract with University of Iowa Press for publication in 2023) is about the idea that poetry might work as a way extending our imaginative range, and why that idea became so powerful in twentieth-century America. My current research uses computational analysis, ethnography, genre theory, and close reading to explore poetry-writing as a participatory practice since the 1960s. If nowadays more people write poetry than read it, what does that shift from consumption to production tell us?
